I have been involved with the "flexibility" project since it started in 2009. It has been awesome! I feel it has provided opportunities to create meaningful change in the high school context. Our key goals for the project are to encourage kids to become more active partners in the learning process and provide them with help when they need it. We are doing this through flexible dismissal (students can be dismissed any time during a class), flexible Fridays (student made timetables, no bells), intervention program, early completion of courses.

Having the opportunity to share this journey with the admin and teaching staff of Springbank has created an excitement for possibilities. We look forward to taking the HS Redesign principles and 'growing' them further into the very fabric of our school. With students as our 'why', we continue to focus on flexibility, relationships (Advisory), engagement, communication, assessment and partnerships.

CCH has been deeply involved in the flexibility project - first as a pilot school and now as we move forward into redesign. In addition to flex time, and offering "off the timetable" courses, we are now expanding into blending courses - offering core and CTS together so students can better demonstrate learning. We've also formalized our credit recovery process to ensure students experience success - not ongoing struggle!

CCH is excited to roll out their Science and Inquiry program on Campus West in the 2014-15 school year. Thanks to our involvement in the Re-Design project, students in core Inquiry Science programs will also be earning an additional 3 credits in our new LDC - Science Literacy (currently awaiting approval from Alberta Ed.) Looking forward to the conversations in Olds.

This is our first year with the high school flexibility project. Some wonderful things have happened in our school as a result of the introduction of a Flex Block. Students have been able to seek 1:1 or small group help sessions with teachers, they have been handing work in on time and the quality of their work has improved. We have also been able to introduce some new courses because of student requests because we have this open time. Teachers have also been flexible with course completion to ensure that students can pass their courses. We have also been able to use the time ensure that our student-run cafeteria operates more efficiently. It has been wonderful to see the change in atmosphere throughout our school. Our Middle School students also have a Flex Block once a week, but now want a plan similar to the one we operate in high school. Flex is one of the best things we've done to improve learning and engagement for our students.
